14 Day Caribbean Cruise
Nassau, Bahamas
Nov. 7, 2010
9 am to 4 pm
Description & Accessibility
We could not find a suitable tour though the cruise line excursions so we booked a four hour private tour.
Accessibility can vary.
We pre-booked a 4 hour tour through ‘Courteous Transfers & Tours’
Gerard Lewis – Tour Agent/Supervisor C.T.T. is in the picture/ The actual driver and tour guide was another person that he assigned to us
Both Gerard and the actual driver (I forgot his name) was very courteous and helped. I found though that I booked too long of a tour and felt that the driver was trying to seek out areas to go through to fill the time slot, and went through a lot of residential streets. The island is after all only 27 miles by 7 miles so unless you have a lot of attractions to stop at you find that you may be stretching to fill the time booked.
This is one spot that I was not aware of and the driver did not point it out to us. There is some wheelchair accessibility at the beach in Cable Beach, Nassau.
We did stop at a cave location, of course I was not able to go in it but did with my wife’s help get to a decorative chair at the entrance to the cave.
The driver did attempt to show us a number of private community areas but each time was refused entry by security at the entrances to these areas.
The first place we went was to Atlantis, and ended up being the main attraction that we saw there. We where dropped there and picked up an hour later. In my view you cannot go to Nassau without going to Atlantis. To be honest we could have easily spent our entire stay there and enjoyed it without going anywhere else in Nassau.
The resort map is..
Where we where dropped off we where able to browse through the public areas of the hotel, some areas of the Atlantic resort are mainly for the guests staying at the resort but you can for a fee get tickets or a day pass to those sections. But there is a lot of areas that you can just wonder around for free. Browse the links above for more information on Atlantis.
Courteous Transfers and Tours has a number of accessible vehicles, you can book a tour or just use them as a taxi service.
As a mobility disabled or restricted person, Atlantis is your best choice and is close to the port. I will give you three options as a recommendation for Nassau…
- Get accessible transportation and spend the day at Atlantis and pre-arrange the time for your accessible taxi to pick you up.
- Take a 2 hour tour of the island (which does not include Atlantis) and then get dropped off at the Atlantis for a couple of hours, and pre-arrange a accessible taxi to pick you up at Atlantis. No point in paying for hourly tour time while you are going around on your own at Atlantis, so make sure that the Atlantis stay is not on the tour pay clock.
- Get accessible transportation and spend some time at Atlantis and pre-arrange the time for your accessible taxi to pick you up, then you can browse around the port shopping area before boarding the ship.
I always try and be back at least two hours prior to the time the ship is due to leave, this leaves you some time in case you are late getting back.
Make sure you get dropped off on the side of the street where the port is so that even if you do want and have time to browse some shopping area beyond the port side at least you will know if you can get there in a scooter or wheelchair you can also get back.
Also check out what excursions the cruise line has to offer which in my case had nothing listed that was accessible
