Trip to Negril Jamaica
Description & Accessibility
We know someone that is now retired and they have a house in Jamaica and one in Canada (the husband was originally from Jamaica) and they spend most winters in Jamaica so we spent 2 weeks visiting them in Jamaica.
Jamaica has its good and bad points, Pick pockets seem to flourish here, so you really have to be extra careful.
Accessibility:
The areas we where in where very poor in regards to accessibility, sidewalks with holes in them, ones that narrow to the point where eventually it is not wide enough for a wheelchair, or suddenly drop off with no ramp. Shopping areas that where poor in wheelchair accessibility. One hardware store had a very steep ramp (likely to bring goods into the store not designed for wheelchairs) not safe for wheelchairs.
The house we stayed at would have been ok for a wheelchair inside but no ramp access into it.
The core tourist areas of Jamaica was more wheelchair accessible but not the country as a whole. We went one day to Negril one of the tourist areas of Jamaica, although security guards where at the entrance to any resorts so I was not able to get a closer look at those, but there was one small shopping complete there that was completely accessible.
We did not go to Montego Bay which is also a tourist area but I suspect the trend here is that the core tourist areas where accessible but outside the core tourist areas where poorer in terms of accessibility.
